OS37: Perception and practice of hand washing among
households in the rural field practice area of RIMS, Ranchi
during COVID-19 Pandemic.

Abstract
Introduction : Hand hygiene is one of the most burgeoning concerns globally and its significance has
only increased especially in the context of Covid-19 outbreak. The current estimates suggest that there
are about 1.4 billion episodes of diarrhoea per year with 123 million clinic visits annually. This study
aims to determine the knowledge and awareness regarding hand hygiene practices among the rural
households along with their socio demographic profile and to assess the environment and health status
of the study population during this pandemic.
Methodology : This community based cross sectional study was carried out among the households of
Anandi which is a subcentre under Ormanjhi block and also a rural field practice area of Department of
PSM, Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, Ranchi. Study duration was for a period of six months. A
pre tested semi structured questionnaire was used to interview the subjects and consecutive sampling
technique was adopted. Final sample size was 110. Data collected was entered in Ms Excel sheet
and was analysed using SPSS software, version 20. Mean and Standard Deviation was calculated for
continuous variables. Chi square test was applied to see the association between categorical variables.
Result : Of the total 110 households, 94 (85.4%) responded that they know the importance of hand
washing and 44 (46.8%)of them said that hand washing is just the part of daily routine and only 20
(21.2%) household agreed that it is good for health. Majority 101(91.7%) of the households said that they
practice hand washing regularly.
Conclusion : Hygiene practices, particularly hand washing with soap is recognized as highly cost
effective public health intervention having potential to significantly reduce disease burden globally. It was
found that majority (83.6%) of the households still prefer to wash hands with only water before meal.
Awareness regarding proper hand hygiene practices was also found to be lacking.

INTRODUCTION • Anaemia is the commonest haematological disorder in which there is qualitative
and quantitative diminution of RBC or Hb. concentration below critical level. According to World Health
Organization (WHO), haemoglobin level below 11 g/dL is labelled as anaemia during pregnancy and
classified as mild (10.0–10.99 g/dL), moderate (7.0– 9.9 g/dL), and severe ((<7.0 g/dL) anaemia. In
Jharkhand 68.4% of pregnant women are anaemic compared to 57.9% at the national level.
