Introduction: Anemia is an important clinical problem among patients suffering from HIV occurring in
around 30% of patients with an asymptomatic infection and around 70% of those with AIDS. It is mainly
contributed to blood loss due to the opportunistic infections occurring in an HIV patient and compromised
immunity. Anemia adds to morbidity and mortality among HIV-infected patients.
Objectives: A systematic review was done to assess the sociodemographic profile and predictors of
anemia among HIV patients.
Materials and Methods: The databases (PubMed, Google Scholar) were searched using Predictors and
anemia in the last 10 years. The articles included only full articles and excluded reviews.
Results: We retrieved 3213 citations from biomedical databases. Out of which, 4 studies were included
in our study involving 2653 subjects. It was observed that there was no specific association with gender,
but it was seen that females were more affected with severe anemia. The severity of anemia was also
affected by the increase in CD4 levels and lower immunity.
Conclusion: Anemia is a very common problem in HIV patients and routine monitoring should be
done for CD4 markers to manage anemia accordingly. Opportunistic infections contribute majorly to the
severity of anemia. In addition to this, anemia during initiation of anti-retroviral therapy also appears to be
contributing to anemia in HIV patients.
