About PSM Department

Preventive and Social Medicine/Community Medicine Dept. is one of the departments amongst the 35
depts. of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi situated in the capital city of Jharkhand.
Our dept. has 40 odd staff including 12 faculty members, 14 post graduate trainees and 4 medical officers.
It is primarily involved in

(1) Teaching of undergraduate and post graduate students of medical and paramedical courses.
(2) Service Delivery and patient care: It has got two Field Practice Area one each in rural (Ormanjhi
block) and urban (Doranda).
(3) Capacity Building: Faculty and paramedical staff of the Dept. are involved in various national health
programme in collaboration with Jharkhand Government for field level training of medical officers
and auxiliary staff.

(4) Monitoring and Evaluation: As per the needs and requirement of Govt. of India and Govt. Of
Jharkhand, we extend our support in supervision and monitoring of projects and programmes e.g.
MDA- NVBDCP, RMNCH+A, NACP etc.
(5) Research: Presently various Multicentric Extramural projects of ICMR(New Delhi), INCLEN India
International, NCDIR Bangalore, Registrar General of India(RGI), AIIMS, New Delhi and many
single center projects funded by MSF, Barcelona, TRI and UNICEF are being carried out. Besides
this, many in-house research projects (intramural funded and non-funded) are undertaken by the
Dept. for evidence generation.
(6) Policy design and making: Our department is involved in planning, policy design and their
implementation. E.g. Airport Environment Management, Disaster management, Rapid Response
team, State level PIP, RMNCH+A, State level External Quality Assurance Committee, GOJ and
various other committees.

The Department is committed to help RIMS, Ranchi attain its zenith and work in consonance with the
vision of RIMS i.e. “to deliver medical services of the highest standard where excellence, compassion
and innovation set the standards, where interests of the patients and their families hold top priority,
where technology is state-of-the-art, where our faculty, students and staff experience an efficient and
cooperative atmosphere and where today`s education and research leads to tomorrow’s cure”. Various
teams of our department are relentlessly engaged in various pursuits be it in the field of academia,
medical advances, research and community processes for goal Health for All” in Jharkhand.
